PERSONAL VALUE SYSTEM

A personal value system is the principles or ideas that guide our behavior, that defines our character.
It makes us understand what we are and what is good and bad for us. If we are unaware of our own values, we end up doing things instantly without proper reasoning and thus suffer due to irresponsible decision making.
" Values define our character." Character is the final output which takes us forward in any particular direction, that we choose to take up in our lives. So in order to build up a good character in general and a happy and contented life in particular , its very essential to set up our own principles or values in life; that is what we say as having "a personal value system."
A personal value system can be divided into many categories according to our wish. But more important among these are the personal values and the spiritual values.
Personal values refer to the principles that we frame for ourselves to live in a society; with family, friends, acquaintances, etc as well as for our careers and work places. Personal values are simply the traits we see as worth aspiring to, and that define our character, in the above mentioned cases.
Spiritual values connect us to things which are not materialistic, but to a higher or superior power that guides us whenever we feel distracted. It could be God for some and conscience for others. These values can tell us what is wrong and what is right for us.
Moreover there are few values which are very essential and desirable these days in the present changing materialistic society; such as, integrity, respect, loyalty and accountability. These four things along with proper knowledge or education, builds up our character, which again is the most impotant part of our existence.
Values determine our action preferences and priorities. Every choice we make or action we perform has its own good as well as bad consequences. So the best way to judge what is right and what is wrong and to face both the choices and their consequences is by constantly examining our own value system. Having a proper personal value system is not only important for our personal lives, but also it is very much required for a successful career and its growth.
No matter what values we choose to adopt in our lives, but knowing about its importance and following them on daily basis is highly recommended to all the readers of this article, especially to the college going students.

Land Reclamation : A Threat to Marine Habitat

Land reclamation is the process to create new land from sea or river beds. The land reclaimed is known as reclamation ground or landfill. Creation of new lands was always a requirement for human needs. Land reclamation increases the land area for countries. With more land, more buildings and infrastructure can be built; and for other reasons like agriculture (primarily before industrialization), beach restoration, landfills (for making the land re-usable for different usages like, for parks, sports fields, etc).
Some examples of land reclamation made at different places throughout the world is given below :-
Netherlands - about 1/5 of the entire country reclaimed from the sea, lakes, marshes and swamps. About 7,000 km2 in total.
South Korea - As of 2006, 38 percent or 1,550 km2 of coastal wetlands reclaimed, including 400  km2 at Saemangeum.
Singapore - 20% of the original size or 135 km2.  99 km2 more are to be reclaimed in recent times ahead.
Hong Kong - Hong Kong Disneyland, Hong Kong International Airport, Kai Tak Airport, etc were all built on reclaimed land. More land reclamation has also taken place on the waterfront on both sides of Victoria Harbour ( In total, around 70 acres).
Macau - 170% of the original size or 17 km2
Mumbai – The seven islands of Bombay (Isle of Bombay, Colaba, Old Woman’s Island, Mahim, Mazagaon, Parel and Worli) were gradually physically united through land reclamation projects over years to form the modern day Mumbai.
Monaco - 0.33 km2 out of 1.98 km2 total is made up of land taken from the sea.
    Tokyo Bay (Japan) - 249 km2
    KobeJapan - 23 km2 (1995).
    Bahrain - 76.3% of original size of 410 km2
New Zealand - significant areas of land totalling several hundred hectares have been reclaimed along the harbour front of Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin.

With so many advantages, there are many disadvantages attached to this. Land reclamation severely damages the marine habitat. Even if corals and other marine creatures are moved to different places from their usual home, where land reclamation has to take place; it usually  happens that, they are not able to survive in the new conditions allotted to them by humans; and so, maximum of them die out. Rampant cutting down of marine plants and killing of marine animals is leading to rapid decrease in their numbers, throughout the globe. This might affect the marine ecosystem balance badly by breaking the marine food chain. Already nature has been playing its own role of destruction by under-sea earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and plate movements; which was, and still is leading to the destruction of marine plants and animals. Although many projects are carried out to check marine habitat destruction throughout the world, still no such remarkable improvements are made or seen, till date. Even if land reclamations seem to be tempting and innovative to human beings, and is leading to rapid developments in different countries, but “Marine life is also a life!

BERMUDA TRIANGLE - An Unsolved Mystery

The "Bermuda Triangle" or "Devil's Triangle" is an imaginary area located off the southeastern Atlantic coast of the United States of America, which is noted for a supposedly high incidence of unexplained disappearances of ships and aircraft. The apexes of the triangle are generally believed to be Bermuda; Miami, Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The US Board of Geographic Names does not recognize the Bermuda Triangle as an official name. The US Navy does not believe the Bermuda Triangle exists. It is reported that Lloyd's of London, the world's leading market for specialist insurance, does not charge higher premiums for vessels transiting this heavily traveled area.

The most famous US Navy losses which have occurred in the area popularly known as the Bermuda Triangle are USS Cyclops in March 1918 and the aircraft of Flight 19 in December 1945. The ship probably sank in an unexpected storm, and the aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean -- no physical traces of them have ever been found. Another well known disappearance is the civilian tanker SS Marine Sulphur Queen carrying bulk molten sulfur which sank in February 1963. Although the wreck of Marine Sulphur Queen has not been located, a life preserver and other floating artifacts were recovered. These disappearances have been used to provide credence to the popular belief in the mystery and purported supernatural qualities of the "Bermuda Triangle."

Since the days of early civilization many thousands of ships have sunk and/or disappeared in waters around the world due to navigational and other human errors, storms, piracy, fires, and structural/mechanical failures. Aircraft are subject to the same problems, and many of them have crashed at sea around the globe. Often, there were no living witnesses to the sinking or crash, and hence the exact cause of the loss and the location of the lost ship or aircraft are unknown. A large number of pleasure boats travel the waters between Florida and the Bahamas. All too often, crossings are attempted with too small a boat, insufficient knowledge of the area's hazards, and a lack of good seamanship.

Some Interesting Explanations - Trying To Solve The Mystery

Today, about that many planes disappear in the region each year and there are a number of theories explaining what could be happening.

The Bermuda Triangle, a stretch of water between Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Florida, has been the site of many plane and ship disappearances.

Twins George and David Rothschild are among the first passengers to have experienced bizarre effects in the Bermuda Triangle. In 1952, when they were 19 years old, the two naval men had to make an emergency trip home on a navy light aircraft, north over the Florida Keys, to attend their father's funeral. "We had been flying for probably 20 or 30 minutes when all of a sudden the pilot yelled out that the instruments were dead and he became very frantic," says George Rothschild. He had lost his bearings, and not only did he not know where he was, he also had no idea how much gas was left in the fuel tanks. After what seemed like hours, they landed safely in Norfolk, on the Florida coast.

Some speculate that it had nothing to do with the location, but rather the instruments that were available at the time. Pilot Robert Grant says that back in the 1940s, navigating a plane involved a lot of guesswork since they relied completely on a magnetic compass to guide them. "Dead reckoning" was used, which means that pilots would trust their compass and then estimate how the wind would influence their planned flight path to remain on track. "No matter what your mind tells you, you must stay on that course," says Grant. "If you don't, and you start turning to wherever you think you should be going, then you're toast."

Wild weather

The landscape of the island of Bermuda is quite unique: it is a remote coral reef precariously perched on a massive extinct volcano. Fisherman Sloan Wakefield, who knows the waters of the Bermuda Triangle very well, thinks that the weather could be responsible for some of the disappearances. "Because the island is a dot in the Atlantic Ocean, it gets weather from everywhere and it can change in a heartbeat. One minute, you can be looking at good weather, and the next moment you've got a low front coming through," he says. He has already seen 15 to 20 foot (4.6m to 6m) waves on the sea.

Hurricanes are common in the Bermuda Triangle area. In the Atlantic Ocean, they typically originate off the African coast and thrive off the moisture of the warm, tropical waters. Hurricane records from the past 100 years have shown that they often head west for the United States but swerve into the waters of the Bermuda Triangle at the last minute. Jim Lushine, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Centre in Miami, Florida studies the weather in the Bermuda Triangle and says that there are more hurricanes in that particular area than in any other in the Atlantic basin.

But thunderstorms in the area can be just as dangerous. In 1986, a historic ship called the Pride of Baltimore vanished from radar screens while it was in the Bermuda Triangle, making a trip from the Caribbean to Baltimore. About four and a half days later, the wreckage and eight survivors were found and they revealed that the ship had been hit by a microburst: 80 mile per hour winds emanating from a freak thunderstorm. It happened so quickly that the crew didn't have time to make a distress call. "The ship was sunk in the downburst, unfortunately with a great loss of life," says Lushine. "Similar downbursts are probably responsible for some of the sunken ships in the Bermuda Triangle."

Even more unpredictable than thunderstorms are waterspouts. These can be caused by tornadoes that move out to sea or rotating columns of air that drop from thunderstorms, creating a vortex of spray. When the moisture condenses, it forms a twisting column that connects the sea to the clouds. Jim Edds, an amateur fisherman who chases and films waterspouts for fun, says that if you are out at night and a tornado-like waterspout develops - the really big, strong ones with high velocity - it can flip your vessel over.

Bubbling methane

Seismic activity at the bottom of the ocean can also be an explanation for disappearing ships. Scientists have discovered that huge bubbles of methane gas can violently erupt without warning from the ocean floor and at least one oil rig is thought to have sunk because of this phenomenon. Ralph Richardson, the director of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, claims that a large pocket of gas could surround a ship, causing it to lose buoyancy and disappear without warning.

At the U.S. Navy's research centre in California, Bruce Denardo, an expert in fluid dynamics, has proved that bubbles from methane gas eruptions could be responsible for vanishing ships in the open ocean. Water pressure causes objects to float, and the deeper the water, the greater the pressure exerted to keep the object floating at the surface. If bubbles from methane are introduced, they lower the density of the water. They take up space, but the volume of water stays the same, causing the buoyant force to decrease. In an experiment with a ball in water, Denardo can demonstrate that the ball sinks deeper and deeper down in water as the amount of bubbles increases, until it reaches a critical point where it sinks completely. "If a ship were to take on enough water, it would sink to the bottom and stay there," says Denardo.

A mysterious time warp?

He has more far out explanations for the Bermuda Triangle disappearances. Property developer Bruce Gernon claims that on December 4th 1970, when he flew from the island of Andross in the Bahamas to Florida, he experienced a distortion in space time. He had made the same trip on many occasions, but he claims that his journey that day was much faster than usual. "I noticed a huge U-shaped opening in the clouds, but as I approached it, the top of the opening closed and it became a horizontal tunnel that appeared to be 10 to 15 miles long," he says. "When the aircraft entered the tunnel, some lines, which I call time lines, appeared which were rotating counter-clockwise. It was difficult to keep it level and concentrate on the other end of the tunnel which was aiming directly for Miami."

Gernon claims that when he came out of the tunnel, it closed fast behind him and he was surrounded by a strange fog. His instruments had stopped working and Air Traffic Control had no radar trace of his plane until they realized that it was actually over Miami beach. Given the time they had been flying, they should still have been about 45 minutes away from Miami. After researching what could have happened, Genon is now writing a book about his experience. "I have come to the conclusion that we experienced a space time warp of a hundred miles in thirty minutes," he says.

Is this scientifically feasible? About 80 years ago, Einstein proposed his general theory of relativity which claimed that huge spinning objects could distort space and time in their surroundings. Although NASA researchers have now found signs that black holes and neutron stars appear to warp space time, it is still a far cry from concepts introduced by science fiction like wormholes, or tunnels in space time that provide travellers with an express route between different dimensions and great distances

Explanations for the vanishings in the Bermuda Triangle are all still theories. But for people who have witnessed bizarre events in this area, there is a strong desire to find some answers. With further research, perhaps the mystery will come to a conclusion.

LINGARAJ TEMPLE - BHUBANESWAR

History Of The Temple :-

Lingaraj Temple is a temple of the Hindu God Shiva and is one of the oldest temples of the Temple City Bhubaneswar, a revered pilgrimage center and the capital of the state of Orissa.

The temple is more than 1000 years old, dating back in its present form to the last decade of the eleventh century, though there is evidence that parts of the temple have been there since sixth century AD as the temple has been emphasized in some of the seventh century Sanskrit texts. This is testimony to its sanctity and importance as a Shiva shrine. By the time the Lingaraj temple was constructed, the Jagannath cult had been growing, historians believe, which is evidenced by the co-existence of Vishnu and Shiva worship at the temple.

The temple is traditionally believed, though without historical authentication, to be built by the SomaVanshi king Jajati Keshari, in 11th century AD. Jajati Keshari had shifted his capital from Jajpur to Bhubaneswar which was referred to as Ekamra Kshetra in the Brahma Purana, an ancient scripture.

Temple complex :-

Lingaraj Temple stands majestically as the largest temple in Bhubaneswar. At 55 metres high, it dominates the landscape with 150 smaller shrines in its spacious courtyard and is surrounded by massive walls lavishly decorated with beautiful sculptures.

This temple has actually four parts:- the main temple, the 'Yajna Shala', the 'Bhoga Mandap' and finally the 'Natya Shala'. This temple has both Lord Shiva and Vishnu. Vishnu is actually present as Saligramam idol. The Shiva idol which is surrounding the Vishnu (Saligramam) idol. Even the temple on the top has got no trishul (which is considered to be the weapon of Shiva) and even Chakra (which belongs to Lord Vishnu). It has only Lord Rama's arrow symbol, probably because Lord Rama was a worshipper of Lord Shiva.

The temple's main gates have Lord Shiva, Trishul on one side and Lord Vishnu, Chakra on the other side.

Sculpture and Temple Traditions :-

This magnificent temple, dedicated to Shiva, represents the quintessence of the Kalinga type of Hindu architecture. Along with the Raja Rani Temple, it is the pinnacle of the architectural exhibition at Bhubaneswar. It contains a profusion of sculptural work. It is built of red sandstone which gives it a darkest color. The massive granite block in the sanctum, the Swayambhu, is worshipped both as Shiva and Vishnu. The harmony of the two sects is seen in this temple where the deity is worshipped as Hari-Hara, that is, Vishnu and Shiva. The presiding deity, is the Swayambhu Linga. The granite block image of the Linga is said to be bathed daily with water, milk and bhang (marijuana) Almost all the Hindu Gods and Goddesses are represented here, reflecting the innate element of harmony within the religion.

POWER OF YOUR LOVE...

The fresh breeze of your love
caring and deep,
has the power
to blow away
the weariness of my soul.

The melodious tilt in your soft voice
caressing and gentle,
has the power
to calm dowm
the restless waves in my mind.

The friendly smile in your eyes
endearing and warm,
has the power
to remove
all my previous sorrows.

The magic of your presence
slow and silent,
has the power
to glow
a billion lamps in my mind.

Let your love glow for ever,
let your song flow for ever,
let your smile never vanish and
magic of your presence
never diminish.....

DO YOU REALLY EXIST ?

You are like a shadow,
appearing and disappearing before my eyes.
You are like a word,
which I speak and recollect.
You are like a dream,
which I often see but don't understand.
You are in my heart and soul,
but still you are not mine.....

THE LAMP IN MY LIFE....

When I am lonely and lost
and know not where to go'
or what to do;
your love is like a lamp
leading me back home.

When I am angry and confused
and lash out at the world
with hurt and pain;
your understanding is the lamp
that brings a ray of hope.

When I am sad and bitter
seeing no reason to go on,
in this harse bleak world;
your concern shines like a lamp
at the end of the tunnel.

When I am cold and grieving
with scarce energy to move
even one step forward;
your encouragement is the lamp
sustaining me with its glow.

Promise me,always to
light the lamp for me;
whatever I do,
however I am.
Wherever I go,I won't
fear then in facing the worst devils,
both inside and outside me.

I shall know, if I lift my eyes
I will see your little lamp'
beckoning on me,
lighting my path,
warming my spirit,
shining on my soul,
wherever I go.....
